The rise of For-Purpose businesses

Updated: Jan 23, 2023

David Spencer Percival

Running recruitment businesses has been my way of life for the last 20 years, but it was not until I became a patron for the Natural History Museum that I discovered their recruitment spend was extremely high. It struck me that too many charities are paying too much for recruitment services and too many recruitment companies are making profit out of charities, which I find troubling. This gave me the drive to do something about it.

The idea was to create an for-purpose recruitment service with expertise at its heart, built around a great level of service to deliver quality candidates and use the profits to create a grants programme for the charities we work with so any money made is returned to the sector. Being in business and contributing to society by providing products and services is purposeful, but I believe it is fundamentally wrong to make a profit out of charities. It is, in my view, acceptable to create business and do business with charities but distribute the profits back to them, which is why I wanted to start this business.

With Percival Recruitment we wanted to do it differently . We have created a business that is for-purpose and not-for-profit that serves charities in the UK. We are building a business that is mission led to provide a space for thought leadership in the sector, improve recruitment outcomes for charities and for-purpose organisations, and over time lower the long term costs to the organisation we work with. It is an exciting project to be building up and I am proud that we are part of a not-for-profit community that does such amazing work every day.

We are not the only for-purpose business working with charities and I have been heartened over the last few years to see the rise of businesses for good. Whether is Toast Ale creating incredible drinks and reducing food waste, or The Big Issue Group helping people experiencing homelessness, in the UK we have some incredible people doing incredible things, and we want to support them – not seek to profit from them.
